Baharat (ounce)
Baharat translates to “spice” in Arabic and is a spice blend that is popular in the Persian gulf region of the Middle East and North Africa. Like many regional recipes there are many different varieties of this spice blend that can vary from region to region and even from city to city and family to family. This blend is traditionally used similarly to the ways that the people of India use Garam Masala and is often added to a dish after a meal is prepared. Baharat has been described as being a version of curry but with a milder and more fragrant aroma. We find it to be a delightfully complex blend that is savory with hints of sweetness and heat and we like to use it as an all purpose seasoning when we’re in the mood for some Middle Eastern flavor. Use this Pan-Mediterranean seasoning to add some wonderful flavor to your ground meat, couscous, chicken, beef, vegetables, soup, stew, rice, meat loaf and meatballs. We have also found that using this on grilled meats added some surprising depth of flavor. Use as a marinade by mixing it with some olive oil and lime juice. This traditional Baharat is hand blended from smoked sweet paprika, black pepper, cumin, coriander, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom.
